The Australian Pavilion in Venice, Italy, was designed by Denton Corker Marshall and housed 'Repair' at La Biennale Architettura, 2018. This exhibition was curated by Mauro Baracco and Louise Wright in collaboration with artist Linda Tegg and responded to the theme 'Freespace'.
Endangered species were among the 10,000 plants cultivated inside and outside the pavilion, having journeyed from Australia to Europe as seeds. An LED lighting installation lit the pavilion and simulated the sun’s energy, enabling the plants to survive indoors.
All but one per cent of the Victorian Western Plains Grasslands have been lost since European settlement.
Curators Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara explained the theme of the 2018 Biennale: “Freespace encourages reviewing ways of thinking, new ways of seeing the world, of inventing solutions where architecture provides for the well being and dignity of each citizen of this fragile planet.”
